It all begins with a promise…
We are in Northern Italy. An elderly woman, over eighty years old, limping and unsteady in her movements, goes to vote for the first time in her life. It is 1946. At last, she is able to cast her ballot, like so many other Italian women. Her father had forbidden her from studying or learning to read and write. But her mother, in secret, gave her a primer, making her promise that she would study not only for herself, but for her as well. From there begins a journey of awareness that will lead her to one of her final acts: placing her ballot into the voting box.
